Why I Choose the Simple Life on the Water

If you’ve been following my posts for a while, you’ve probably realized one thing by now: fishing is a massive part of my life at home. It’s the backdrop to some of my favorite memories and the ultimate way I unwind.

But not all fishing is created equal.

My dad was a purist in his own right. He loved to fly fish, troll, get out on the big boat, and really test his skills against the water. He loved the technique, the gear, and the chase.

Me? Ive always been a little easier to satisfy.

The Art of the Cane Pole

While Dad was rigging up complex setups, my equipment needs were beautifully basic. Give me a cane pole, a line, a hook, and a quill.

Let’s be clear about one thing: I wanted a quill. I did not want a bobber.

Now, I know a lot of people swear by a plastic bobber, and that’s totally okay. No judgment here! But for me, nothing compares to the magic of a quill. The way it lays flat on the glass-like water, suddenly stands straight up when a fish takes notice, and then completely disappears underneath the surface? To me, that is absolute paradise.

There is nothing quite like getting positioned right over a bed of crappie or brim, sitting there all day, and just watching that quill dance and dive.

Back to Basics

Don’t get me wrong, the other types of fishing are great too. But my go-to has always been rooted in a simpler life. I don’t need a tackle box the size of a suitcase or a boat with a massive engine.

My perfect day requires just a few things:

  • A trusty cane pole
  • A cup of worms or a cage of crickets
  • A few catalpa worms (if I’m in the mood to hunt for a catfish)

It’s quiet, it’s slow, and it grounds me. In a world that’s always telling us to upgrade, optimize, and speed up, there’s a deep peace in knowing that a stick, a string, and a dancing quill are still more than enough to make a perfect day.
